The Kremlin said on Tuesday that Russia does not expect any changes in its frosty relations with Britain under new Prime Minister Liz Truss.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to the official TASS news agency, "Considering the statements made by Mrs. Truss when she was still foreign minister... it can be said with great certainty that no changes for the better are expected."

Britain, under the outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson, was one of the strongest supporters of Ukraine after Moscow launched its attack on the former Soviet republic.

Boris Johnson quitted Britain's Prime Minister's Office on Tuesday, ending three years of turmoil and leaving his successor, Liz Truss, with a long list of problems that must be addressed quickly.

Johnson, who was forced out of office by the Conservative Party in the wake of a series of scandals, urged the country to come together and support his successor.

After a farewell speech outside his official residence in Downing Street, Johnson left London for Scotland, where he will hand in his resignation to Queen Elizabeth. After that, Liz Truss will be appointed prime minister and begin forming the government.

Liz Truss, who took over as Britain's prime minister on Tuesday, will face a series of the toughest challenges since World War Two, notably rising energy prices, a looming recession, and a struggle between workers and employers.

Truss, the fourth Conservative leader to serve as prime minister in six years, flew to the home of the royal family in Scotland to meet Queen Elizabeth and be asked to form a government. She will take over this position, succeeding Boris Johnson, who was forced to resign after three tumultuous years in office.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement that the Queen "has received Member of Parliament Truss and asked her to form a new government. Mrs. Truss accepted Her Majesty's offer."

It is expected that LizTruss, which officially takes over the premiership on Tuesday, will continue its policy of confrontation with Russia.
