Facebook Loses Its Position Among The Most Downloaded Applications

It seems that Facebook's popularity has recently begun to decline, as the application has begun to struggle to maintain its position in the list of the 10 most downloaded applications on smart devices in the United States, according to an analysis of data from Apple's App Store.

Competitors are getting ahead of Facebook

Technology website TechCrunch indicated that young users are turning to newer social media platforms such as TikTok and BeReal, while traditional platforms such as Facebook are struggling to maintain their popularity.

For example, Facebook exited from the top ten most downloaded free applications on 6 occasions during the first half of 2021, compared to 59 times in the first half of 2022.

Looking at the whole year 2021, the application came out of the list on 7 occasions, compared to 97 occasions in the year 2022 so far, which indicates that Facebook may exit the list completely due to the increasing popularity of new competing applications.

The application also remained outside the list of the top ten applications for 37 continuous days during the current year, while the longest period was only two days last year.

A new analysis of the data of the App Store provided by the “data.ai” platform, also confirmed the decline in Facebook’s popularity, as it indicated that it left the list of the ten most downloaded applications in the United States 4 times during the year 2021, compared to 110 days during the current year. The period of the application's exit from the top ten list was during last April, May, and June.

How concerned should Facebook administrators be?

Reaching a high ranking in the top 10 list is one way to measure an app's success - an indicator of a company's ability to attract new users.  But it is not a sufficient indicator to measure its ability to retain existing users. Facebook is still the best app for monthly active users as of the last quarter of 2021.

However, when he loses his position among the top ten applications for newcomers to social networks - such as the current No. 1 application B Real - it is worse than losing his position for logical reasons such as what happened with the Zoom application, which was necessary during the Corona pandemic period.

The failure to inspire a new generation of users worries the company, a topic that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has spoken about candidly before.

Last fall, the CEO told Investors that the company was "retooling" its teams to make youth service the main goal, rather than "improving the site for more seniors" using its apps. He acknowledged that this kind of transformation may take years, not months, to materialize.

It is not known whether the company will succeed in marketing Facebook to a new generation, especially at a time when the company is betting billions on the so-called metaverse.
